SONYC

Overview

This school year our program will be focusing on STEM, Literacy, Physical Activity & Leadership through our classes and clubs, for all grades.

STEM classes will include fun but engaging classes such as Mad Science. After research and understanding the effects of reactions and cause and effects of mixing different elements and chemicals, students carry out live experiments with their staff. They will be able to learn through hands on experience by making bouncing balls with borax, and mixing shaving cream and glue to make slime, or oil, water, and antacids to make lava lamps, or yeast and peroxide to create a bubbling volcano.

Literacy classes include journalism, mythology and scrabble club. The participants will be reporting as news anchors to the program student body this semester. They will work on a weekly newsletter to send out to their friends that they have to write, edit and report back. While the current events may include what is happening around the world and country and hometown, it will also include their current school events that excite and intrigue them. Mythology is a class were students will delve deep into the world of gods and monsters and their origins. They will be able to learn and read about these historical characters through novels, poems, and songs. Then they themselves will attempt to create their own story narrating their own made up mythological creature.

Leadership classes such as Debate, explores students opinions and makes them explore their mind to develop a sense of how they feel. They will learn how to have educated arguments with supported facts and research. Their public speaking skills will also be targeted as they debate out loud amongst each other.Physical activity classes include tennis, basketball and potential yoga classes. Students will learn skills and drills and basics of each game. They will engage in friendly competition within their own students body when they split into teams against each other, as well as verse other students from other other programs. Yoga will help relax and calm students minds through mediation and mind exercises,  while also expanding their knowledge of body movement.
